Research interests (nur englisch)

The Schilling laboratory has three major research interests.

Firstly, the laboratory focuses on the functional biology of proteolytic enzymes and is particularly interested in exploring protease specificity and protease substrates. To this end, sophisticated proteomic techniques are being developed and applied. The interplay of different proteases and their activity control by endogenous inhibitors is also an important area of research.

Secondly, the laboratory investigates disease-specific proteome profiles with a particular focus on tumor biology. These findings are translated into distinctive patterns of functional biology as well as marker panels for disease progression.

Thirdly, the laboratory is actively developing bioinformatic tools for the in-depth analysis of mass spectrometry data. This research interest is motivated by the strong usage of mass spectrometry in the Schilling laboratory to investigate protease functionality and translational proteome biology.

Work in the Schilling Laboratory is funded by the Emmy-Noether Programme of the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft and by the European Research Council.
